'The Tog' - Norwegian Constitution Day

We took part in the annual Norwegian Constitution Day parade or 'the Tog'.
It is a celebration of Norwegian independence.

There were visitors from Norway, as part of celebrations arranged by the Orkney Norway Friendship Association and Orkney Islands Council. Celebrations began at 10.30am with a short memorial service at the Norwegian war graves in St Olaf’s Cemetery, followed by a medal presentation ceremony and concert in St Magnus Cathedral.
Leaving the pier.

Up the street to the cathedral.
One of the guests was First Secretary of the Royal Norwegian Embassy in London, Gøril Johansen.

Another parcel arrives!

Class 5 came back to school after the Easter holidays to find another parcel from Norway! It had lots of photographs of the children in their school and some drawings they had made for us too. We really enjoyed looking at the photographs, comparing their school to ours!

We have just finished parcelling up our package to Norway. We hope they like all our letters and gifts we've sent them! We have also asked them some questions about the Vikings as we have been learning about the Vikings coming from Norway to Orkney.

A parcel from Norway

On Friday we received a package from the class we have a link with in Kirkevoll Skole in Bergen in Norway.

It was full of lots of exciting letters, cards, drawings and things they had made for us.

It was very exciting looking at everything and finding out more about the children in Norway.

The package from Norway.

Today we opened the package from Class 5 Kirkevoll skole in Bergen, Norway.
It was so exciting!
We thought their English was very good. We couldn't write in Norwegian so well.
We found out that it was snowy there, so we went outside to show them what the weather has been like here too.
Watch us open the package in the video.

Thank you to the three classes at Kirkevoll.
We hope you watch the video and leave some comments.
We already have lots of ideas for what we want to send back to you!

Christmas Songs from Norway

Every year in Orkney we have visitors from Norway at the time of the community tree lighting events.
This year we have been practising some Norwegian Christmas songs and we sang with the Norwegian musicians when they visited us at school to help us get ready for our own school tree lighting.

You can hear us singing along with them in Norwegian here.
